Self referral for termination of pregnancy in NHS Lothian

It is now possible for women considering a termination of pregnancy to refer themselves for this. Women may still to choose to discuss this request with their GP or with a clinician at a sexual health clinic, if they prefer to be referred by those routes.

Women who wish to self refer should telephone the Lothian Abortion Referral Service (LARS) on the dedicated number (0131 536 2454) on weekdays between 9am and 3 pm, where they will speak to an administrative assistant who will take their contact details and provide an appointment date/ time to be seen at a specialist clinic either at Chalmers (CHOICES service) or St Johns Hospital Gynaecology outpatients (West Lothian patients).

At the clinic a routine ultrasound is conducted, blood and STI tests offered, and discussion about the request for termination and arrangements made for the procedure as appropriate, or onward referral for decision support if necessary.

Information about the termination of pregnancy service is also available on the Lothian Sexual Health Website.
